Sanitization Is More Than Safety— It’s Peace of Mind

Sanitization Stations

Place hand sanitizer and alcohol wipes at key points in your establishment where customers enter, pass by and congregate.
Commercial dispensers and stations that make your offerings stand out are best, but retail options are also helpful.

Sanitization Plans

Establishing a standard procedure for sanitization according to expert guidelines is key to effectiveness. Leaving employees to their own discretion creates opportunities for errors in judgement.

Once you have a set plan in place, consider making it public for your customers with signage, and website and social media display.

Steps Adapted From the CDC

Businesses, schools and organizations are going to have different protocols for sanitization, but the following guidelines are principles that everyone can keep in mind.

Disinfecting Hard (Non-Porous) Surfaces

Such as counters, tables, handrails, door knobs, etc., paying special attention to high-touch surfaces

  • If surfaces are dirty, clean them first with soap and water
  • Then use an EPA-registered disinfectant
  • Not all cleaning products are actually disinfectants, check packaging to make sure
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparation, application and contact time

Cleaning Soft, Porous Surfaces That Cannot Be Laundered

Such as carpets and permanently attached seat cushions

  • Remove any visible sources of potential contamination, like dropped food
  • Clean with an appropriate disinfecting agent for the surface and material
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for preparation and application

Cleaning Soft, Porous Items That Can Be Laundered

Such as linens and uniforms

  • Do not to shake the item—this can disperse viruses and contaminants into the air
  • Wash according to the manufacturer’s instructions with the warmest water possible
  • Dry all the laundered items as completely as possible
  • Disinfect equipment used to store and transport dirty laundry

Cleaning Electronic Items

Such as touch screens, tablets, phones and computers

  • First remove any visible contaminants with a soft, clean dry cloth
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfection
  • If instructions are unavailable, consider alcohol wipes with <70% alcohol
  • Be sure to avoid any pooling of liquid and dry as quickly as possible
